Dairy farming is an intensive activity and profitability is influenced by a number of factors. Land availability is one such factor that will affect profitability to a great extent. While for most of the schemes land requirement is kept at 2 Kanals for every 10 cows it would be prudent to have more. In house production of grains and fodder will reduce input costs to a large extent.
Starting a dairy farm requires planning and fair knowledge about animal care & management. How to orient your farm, what housing system to adopt, how to choose dairy cows for your farm, what are the feeding requirements for animals of different ages and productivity, how to identify sick animals, what vaccines and medicines do dairy animals require periodically?. The answer to these questions and many others have to be known before you embark up on this venture.
The Department of Animal Husbandry, Kashmir along with the Entrepreneurship Development Institute organises capsule courses in many livestock farming ventures including Dairy Farming for prospective entrepreneurs. The course extended over 2 weeks, familiarizes prospective dairy farmers with all the technical and managerial aspects of the trade. You would be greatly benefited if you participate in the course prior to starting your farm.
